A Family Day Out at Jaguar Land Rover: Experiencing British Engineering Up Close
Visiting the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) factory in Solihull was a truly unforgettable experience for our family. My husband works as an automotive engineer at JLR, and in 2023 the company hosted a special event, “Proud Creators’ Day,” inviting employees’ families to explore the factory.
The Scale of the Factory

The factory is enormous—so big that visitors travel between different areas on internal buses, with more than fifteen stops across the site. We had only a few hours and decided to focus on two key areas, but even that barely scratched the surface. Arriving early didn’t make a difference; the place was buzzing with excitement and energy.
Welcome Gifts and Lunch

As soon as we entered, each family member received a welcome bag. Inside were Jaguar keyrings, miniature Range Rover models, and other fun souvenirs. Lunch was organised via a token system, allowing us to pick one main course, one dessert, and two drinks, including coffee or ice cream. It was such a thoughtful touch and added a playful, family-friendly vibe to the visit.
Kids’ Reactions

Our children, Kimchi and Soju, were over the moon. Soju practically ran towards the newest Range Rover and immediately jumped into the driver’s seat. Kimchi was fascinated by the engineering displays, although she soon got distracted by the fun activities around. Despite my husband explaining engine details and vehicle technology, the kids were more interested in simply exploring, climbing into cars, and marveling at the sheer size of everything.
Royal Vehicles

One of the most fascinating parts was seeing vehicles specially made for the British Royal Family. Jaguar Land Rover maintains a dedicated Royal Vehicles Department, creating bespoke cars with luxury interiors, bulletproof glass, reinforced chassis, and even advanced communication systems. Knowing that these cars are crafted for official royal duties brought a tangible sense of British history and prestige.
The Range Rover SV Carmel Edition

The Range Rover SV Carmel Edition was particularly impressive. Its size and presence were almost intimidating, making it clear why manoeuvring such a vehicle on everyday UK roads would be a challenge. Nonetheless, the attention to detail and craftsmanship were remarkable—it’s not just a car; it’s a statement.
Assembly Line and Engineering Marvels

Seeing the assembly lines in action was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The combination of robotics and human skill showcased the precision and care that go into every vehicle. The scale of the operations made it impossible to see everything in one visit, but the glimpse we got highlighted JLR’s dedication to quality and innovation.
Family Fun

The factory didn’t forget the little ones either. Food trucks offered a variety of options, including vegan-friendly choices, while bouncy castles and bumper cars kept the children entertained. An unexpected highlight was being able to board a fire engine, which had both Chloe and Leo squealing with excitement.
Reflections
As we finally left the factory, the sheer size and intricacy of the operations stayed with us. What stood out most was not just the engineering excellence but the way the experience was designed for families—welcoming, interactive, and memorable. Watching our children’s eyes light up at the cars, the scale of the factory, and even the smallest details reminded me of the joy of learning and experiencing together as a family.
This visit made me appreciate British automotive craftsmanship in a new way. It wasn’t just about seeing cars being built—it was about understanding the stories, the history, and the people behind each vehicle. We left feeling inspired, grateful, and already planning a return trip to explore more of this incredible factory.
