Cairngorm Reindeer Centre: A Magical Highland Encounter
After exploring Edinburgh, our next stop was the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, nestled in the stunning Cairngorm Mountains. It’s roughly a three-hour drive from Edinburgh and is the only place in the UK where you can meet a semi-wild herd of reindeer up close. Naturally, we booked in advance to ensure our spot on this unique experience.
Arrival and Preparation
Our adventure began at the Reindeer Centre itself. Upon arrival, staff checked that everyone was wearing appropriate footwear—hiking boots or wellies are essential. They also handed us a paper to display clearly on our car dashboard, which would identify us as Hill Trip participants. Then, we drove a short five-minute stretch to the Sugarbowl Car Park, where all participants gathered before the trek.
The Hill Trip Trek
Guided by an experienced leader, we set off on a 30–40 minute uphill walk along the mountain trail. Surprisingly, it wasn’t strenuous, making it suitable for children and adults alike. The scenery alone was breathtaking; the rolling Scottish Highlands kept us mesmerised from start to finish. Along the way, we even encountered sparkling streams, perfect for a few quick photos.
Meeting the Reindeer
At last, we reached the vast open enclosure where approximately 150 reindeer roam freely. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the herd while we had the opportunity to feed them and observe their behaviour. The experience is incredibly memorable—watching the reindeer approach, snap up their feed, and interact in their semi-wild environment was truly magical.
The Hill Trip typically lasts around 1.5 hours, though our session was closer to one hour. Participants can leave early if needed. As this is a high-altitude location, weather can be unpredictable, so waterproof jackets and sturdy boots are strongly recommended. While strollers aren’t practical, children aged four and above can easily take part, making it an excellent family-friendly outing.

The guide emphasised several important points. Always supervise children closely—reindeer are curious and fast-moving. Never crouch or lower your body near them, as this could trigger a defensive response. Feeding should be done with a flat hand to avoid accidental nips, and sudden movements or loud noises should be avoided. Touching the reindeer is prohibited, preserving both your safety and the animals’ semi-wild nature.
The Reindeer Story
The Cairngorm herd has a fascinating history. In 1952, Swedish reindeer expert Mikel Utsi and his Danish wife Dr. Ethel Lindgren introduced Swedish reindeer to the Scottish Highlands, recognising the environment as ideal for these animals. After initial quarantine in Edinburgh Zoo, the herd gradually grew, and today around 150 reindeer roam over 10,000 acres of mountain and meadow. Interestingly, the herd consists mostly of females; only a single male is present to manage breeding and minimise in-herd competition.
Another curious fact: male reindeer shed their antlers in winter, whereas females retain theirs until after calving. So, those classic Christmas sleigh-pulling reindeer are most likely female!
Feeding Fun and Photo Opportunities
Our daughter, Kimchi, immediately took an interest in a particularly relaxed reindeer lying down, while others energetically devoured their feed. The guides showed us how to hand-feed safely, and we even had a chance to snap some memorable photos with the most photogenic members of the herd. The cheerful chaos of the reindeer, combined with the stunning backdrop, made it a day we won’t forget.
