A Serene Stop at Glencoe: One Evening Unwinding in the Highlands
Scotland was moving fast, every day a new adventure. We were ticking off sights like some sort of travel checklist, rushing, marvelling, and moving on before we could even catch our breath. And then, midway through our trip, I thought, “Maybe we could slow down just a little today.”
For our family, Glencoe was that perfect pause. The drive itself was mesmerizing, with Highland mountains and shimmering lochs stretching endlessly. And when we arrived at our lodge-style accommodation, it felt like the universe had conspired to give us a breather.
A Relaxed Evening
Instead of heading out for another excursion, we deliberately slowed the pace. We got back to the lodge earlier than usual, allowing for a quiet evening. Our bungalow was fully equipped with a kitchen, making it easy to stay in and cook.

We popped into the nearby M&S Food near Ben Nevis, grabbing supplies for both a picnic and dinner. Thankfully, our car’s portable fridge kept everything fresh until we were ready. On the way back, a Highland cow appeared by the roadside, looking remarkably photogenic. Definitely a must-see when visiting the Highlands!
Cooking & Sunday Roast

Once settled, my husband took the kitchen reigns, preparing a Sunday roast with vegan sausages and roasted vegetables. We also bought Yorkshire puddings – a British classic that surprises visitors. Crispy on the outside and slightly chewy inside, they pair perfectly with gravy. The kids’ eyes lit up at the sight.

I poured myself a glass of wine and enjoyed the balcony view. The mountains glowed under the soft evening light. Kimchi, our daughter, had her beloved Lamb-Lamb toy perched on her bed – a snapshot of domestic bliss in the Highlands.

When it was time to eat, the view outside was almost distracting. The food looked delicious, but the mountains were even more captivating. The kids struggled with forks and knives, but laughter filled the room as we savoured the meal.
Evening Reflection

After dinner, we settled in for a family movie. The kids watched from one sofa, us from another, while I kept sneaking glances at the spectacular sunset outside. That night, we realised how rejuvenating just a few hours of peace could be. Hot tub, view, simple dinner – everything contributed to a rare sense of calm.
The Next Morning

The laundry from the previous evening had dried, including our wet hiking shoes – a small but satisfying win. Kimchi spent a few moments gazing out at the view, seemingly storing the memory away. Even in just 18 hours, Glencoe had done its magic: fatigue melted away, spirits lifted, and the scenery lingered in our hearts.
