After immersing ourselves in the awe-inspiring York Minster and The Shambles, we decided it was time to explore the rest of York city. Unlike many other towns, York feels alive with history on every corner. From Roman roots to Viking settlements, and now one of the best-preserved medieval cities in England, walking here is like stepping back through centuries.

Even just wandering around the streets reveals hidden treasures. Timber-framed buildings, stone pavements, and colourful shopfronts line the roads, each with its own story. Outside the York Minster Conference Centre, we paused to photograph a single door that looked almost too pretty to pass by. These small architectural details are scattered everywhere in York, inviting you to slow down and explore.
Quirky Shops & Local Discoveries
One particularly interesting stop was the York Gin shop. I hadn’t realised York was famous for its gin! The shop offered a range from traditional London Dry to Roman Fruit flavours. Even if you don’t buy anything, there’s usually a tasting option, making it a fun, immersive experience. Perfect for anyone who enjoys a tipple or just wants to discover local craftsmanship.
As we wandered, we stumbled across street performers. One musician caught Soju’s attention entirely, and he stood mesmerised throughout the performance. Watching him so engrossed reminded me of how travel is just as much about experiencing moments as it is about seeing sights. We left a £5 tip to show our appreciation, a small gesture that made the day feel even more special.
Shambles Market to Streets Beyond
Adjacent to The Shambles, the Shambles Market spreads out with artisanal goods, vintage items, flowers, and local delicacies. We enjoyed the street food festival happening that day, grabbing bites from gourmet stalls and finding cosy spots to sit and watch the bustle of city life. The mix of old-world charm and lively market energy is uniquely York.

Walking further, the city surprises you with quirky finds: small cafes, independent bookshops, and even a Korean restaurant called “Eomeonijip” tucked amidst the medieval streets.
