[Whitby Food Trail] Why Whitby’s Fish & Chips are More Than Just Seaside Snaffles
When walking around Whitby, there’s this savoury scent chasing the sea breeze; it’s unmistakable — fish & chips! Honestly, I used to think “Isn’t it just something you get everywhere in England?” But Whitby proved me wrong. This town is like the pilgrimage site for fish & chips lovers.
What Makes Whitby’s Fish & Chips Stand Out

Whitby has long been a fishing and shipping town — fresh cod and haddock are hauled from the North Sea straight to the harbour, which means the ingredients are already a step above. What was once a hearty meal for dock workers has become a beloved local tradition. When I bit into my first portion here, I thought, “Wow, this is nothing like the fish & chips in London.” Especially when eaten by the waterfront, gulls overhead, salt wind in your hair — atmosphere counts too!
Trenchers: Traditional & Generous
Address: New Quay Road, Whitby, YO21 1DH
Open: Every day 11:30 am – 8:30 pm
Trenchers is a large, traditional fish & chips restaurant by the harbour, loved by locals and tourists since 1980. When we arrived, I was relieved — it’s roomy, so we didn’t wait long for a table. I remember picking cod and haddock, husband doing the same. The adult fish & chips were about £18.50; the kids’ menu (with drink and dessert) was about £9.60. Chloe had the smaller cod from the kids’ set, and though portion was smaller, the value was excellent.

They served tartar sauce and ketchup immediately, and I paired mine with a malt vinegar — oh, that tang just lifts the flavour! I thought: I’ve become a bit more “English” than I expected. The batter was crisp, the fish juicy, the chips golden. Even the sides — mushy peas, baked beans — were spot on. And for a family of four, total was £55.60, which with portions and quality felt very fair. They even gave us a 10% discount coupon for next visit — super sweet touch.
